A tax lien is a public document recorded with the county clerk in the county where an employer either resides or has a location. The line is placed when an employer becomes delinquent in payment of unemployment insurance taxes or contributions and related amounts. The lien attached to real property (i.e. land/building) owned by the employer and is intended to prevent the transfer of that real property until the tax debt has been resolved.
TWC does not report this delinquency or the lien to credit agencies, but the lien can be found in public records by any person who may be performing a title search on the real property in question.
If your tax account is secured by a tax lien, judgment, or assessment, the amount of time required for a release varies with the tax payment option you choose.
To release a tax lien, call the TWC Collections Section at 512-463-9698 or email collections.taxreleases@twc.texas.gov.
